This ointment helps clear infection by killing bacteria that cause inflammation, redness, discharge, and irritation in the eye.
Directions
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor, pharmacist, or the patient information leaflet instructs.
Apply a small amount of ointment (about 1cm) to the affected eye every 3 hours, or more frequently if your doctor advises.
For newborn babies, treatment should not last longer than 10 to 14 days, and a reduced dose may be needed to lower the risk of side effects.
Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment, and avoid touching the tip of the tube to your eye or any surface.
If you are using other eye drops or ointments, wait at least 5 minutes between each product.
Warnings and precautions
Do not use Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment if you are:
allergic to chloramphenicol or any of the other ingredients
wearing contact lenses
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this treatment if you:
have ever had blood disorders or very low blood cell counts after using chloramphenicol
have a family history of blood or bone marrow problems
are taking other medications
are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
are breastfeeding
If you’re using any other eye treatments, such as drops or ointments, let your pharmacist or doctor know before starting this one.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if your doctor believes it’s necessary.
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, always ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any new medicine.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.
Common side effects include:
temporary stinging or blurred vision after applying the ointment
mild eye irritation
Less common side effects:
easy bruising or bleeding
signs of infection
unusual tiredness or weakness
If these effects persist or worsen, stop using the product and seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Serious side effects
Stop using the ointment and get emergency medical help if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as:
swelling of the face, lips, or throat
rash or hives
difficulty breathing
sudden dizziness or loss of consciousness
Storage information
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use and out of sight and reach of children.
Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging - this refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of unused medicine via household waste or wastewater; ask your pharmacist how to discard it safely.
